What Actually Matters When You Compare

Mounted ratchet strap systems all look similar in a product photo. They are not the same product. Here is what to actually check before you buy one, from any brand.

The Short Version

Six things that actually differ between brands

Patent status. Mounting plate material and how it's manufactured. Where assembly actually happens. Whether rated specs are published or just claimed. Warranty terms. And how many trucks the system actually fits. Everything else is marketing language.

The Checklist

What to ask before you buy

Patent status Is the mounting mechanism patent-granted, patent-pending, or unprotected? A granted patent means the design has cleared USPTO review, not just been filed.
Mounting plate construction CNC-machined steel holds tighter tolerances than stamped or cast plates. Ask what process the brand actually uses, not just "steel."
Assembly location Hand-assembled and inspected in the USA is a different supply chain than drop-shipped from a third-party fulfillment warehouse. Ask where the kit is actually built.
Published specs Rated break strength and working load limit should be published numbers from testing, not marketing adjectives like "heavy-duty."
Warranty Ask what's covered, for how long, and what voids it. "Warranty" without terms is not a warranty.
Fitment breadth Does the system fit your exact truck with a purpose-built mount, or a universal plate that works on "most" trucks?

What People Actually Ask

Buying guide questions answered

Who invented the mounted, auto-retracting ratchet strap?

RAD Truck Straps holds a granted US patent on the permanently mounted, auto-retracting ratchet strap mounting system. Founder Jeramie built the original design for his own Ford F-150 before RAD existed as a company.

What should I check before buying a mounted ratchet strap system?

Patent status, mounting plate material and manufacturing process, where the kit is actually assembled, whether rated specs are published, the exact warranty terms, and how many trucks the system fits.

Does RAD Truck Straps come with a warranty?

Yes. RAD Truck Straps are backed by a lifetime warranty.

What's the difference between a permanent and a removable mounted strap system?

Permanent systems like RAD install once with CNC-machined precision and stay in place. Removable systems trade some of that rigidity for the ability to take the strap out when it's not needed. See our permanent vs. removable comparison for the full breakdown.

Is a CNC-machined mounting plate actually better than a stamped one?

CNC machining holds tighter tolerances than stamping or casting, which affects fit consistency and long-term durability under load. It's also a more expensive process, which is part of why precision-machined kits cost more than stamped alternatives.
